Sitting at the start of the famous Camel Trail, the original prison was built for King George III in 1779 and is the perfect alternative day out. The jail you see today was built by the prisoners who brought 20,000 tons of granite from Bodmin’s “Cuckoo Quarry” to its current location; creating a formidable building split over six fascinating floors. This unique building is steeped in both social and architectural history, and offers our guests an amazing insight into Cornish Penal Life over the centuries. Visit the cold dank cells, look up at the thin light filtering through small barred windows and imagine being sentenced to even a week in such desolation. Inevitably this would have been a very lonely life, with the knowledge each day would bring more of the same hunger, cold conditions and hard labour on the treadmill for all civil prisoners, with additional cruel activities such as “cannon ball catch" for naval prisoners - designed to keep them fit for battle on release. You will leave us having experienced and learnt about a horrific life behind bars, and what it may have been like to spend time in the condemned cell before a journey to our gallows. With a newly refurbished and improved exhibition for 2013, including basement rooms unearthed for the first time in 60 years, we look forward to welcoming you here. Although many of our villages may have lost their post office or local shop they have managed to retain the all important village inn, where you get a real sense of history and can imagine the generations of local people who would have enjoyed the hospitality in days gone by. That sense of timelessness still pervades, although these days the ‘local’ offers ... Read more...
