Things to do inLaunceston

Visitor information for Launceston in Cornwall

As the ancient capital of Cornwall, the busy market town of Launceston is also the gateway to this magical county.

Dominating the town is Launceston Castle, which was built in the 11th Century. Now owned by English Heritage it is open daily from 1st April until late October, when visitors can trace 1,000 years of the castle's history, with finds from site excavations.

The whole of the Launceston is steeped in history and a visit to Lawrence House, which houses one of the finest museums in the South West, is a must.

Other notable buildings include Launceston Priory, at one time one of the wealthiest in Cornwall; The Northgate and Prison where Quaker George Fox was imprisoned; and Southgate Arch which is now home to an art gallery and the Town Hall.

Launceston boasts a number of shops that can be found around the Town Square, a sports centre, bowls clubs and local cricket and football teams.
